Helena and James' Wedding 5th September 2014

Walking up the aisle to meet her true love brought tears to the eyes of Helena Skelly as she realised her dream wedding was becoming a reality, and memories that will last to eternity were being made for all her friends and family.

Helena married her fiancĂ© James Beatty at The Lucan Spa Hotel on Friday 5th September 2014 after the hotel and a number of top wedding suppliers donated the happy couple their wedding to the value of €10,000.

The hotel had run a competition along with Gazette Newspapers to offer one lucky couple the chance to win a dream wedding worth €10,000. "We were soon inundated with many people on our Facebook page commentating on our page for Helena and James to win", explained Claire Casey, one of the hotel's wedding coordinators. "At this stage, we did not know of the couple's situation". Finally, Helena's friend Deborah Murphy sent in an official entry and outlined the reason's behind recommending James and Helena. "We learnt that Helena was suffering from terminal cancer through Deborah's entry. Their story touched a nerve with everyone here in the hotel, as cancer is something that has affected everyone at one point in their life".

As per procedure of the competition, the hotel were allowed recommend a number of entrants to go through to the final 20, where the winner would be chosen in a public vote. "Initially, we had Helena and James down for a top 20 spot", explained Claire. "But just one day in the office, myself and my colleague Ulick decided to take them out of the competition and offer the couple their wedding on the hotel. We then continued with the competition separately (eventually won by Louise and Terry)."

James and Helena with Claire and Ulick from The Lucan Spa Hotel
Claire and Ulick called out to the hospital and delivered the good news to Helena and James personally. "They came to the hospital and told me they were giving me a wedding. I was gobsmacked" Helena told us later.

"It was one of those days I don't think I will ever forget" added Ulick. "Myself, Claire and Cathy from the Gazette visited Helena, James and Helena's daughter Rebecca in Beaumont Hospital and Claire announced the news to them. Both James and Helena burst into tears at the announcement and it definitely hit me then on what it really meant to them both. At one point I looked over at Claire and she looked back at me as if to say "Don't cry!" But by then it was too late as we were both welling up. It was a whirlwind of emotions but we were glad and thankful as a hotel to be in a position to assist Helena and James."

Following the announcement, a number of other wedding suppliers heard of the story and offered their services free of charge also. These included Pat from Trendphotography.ie in Lucan, Helen from Gift Cakes in Clondalkin, Greg from Dublin Formal Wear in Lucan, Jackie from Jackie's Flowers in Ballyfermot, Gerry from Getmarried.ie, Celtic Limos, Liz from Bridal Heaven in Swords and DBS Promotions supplying the band Vertigo for the night.

Speaking about the day itself, Helena said it couldn't have gone any better "It was absolute fantastic from start to finish and everything was gorgeous". The weather can be touch-and-go for many couples on their special day, but thankfully the weather on James and Helena's day was not a problem as the sun shone all day. The couple's beautiful wedding civil ceremony was carried out by Gerry from getmarried.ie and took place in the hotel, and was followed by a reception of 100 friends and family. "Having everyone celebrating it is just amazing. We have built memories for everyone and have amazing photographs for everyone to look back on".

Praising the hotel for making her day happen and making it one to remember, the happy couple said "I couldn't fault the hotel for anything. The meal, everything, was amazing and the staff were absolute fantastic. They were on top of everything from start to finish. We want to thank everyone who made this possible, all the suppliers and of course The Lucan Spa Hotel, especially Claire, and the owners who made all this happen".

  1. Yeah I agree how emotional moments are they when a bride realise that her dream is going to become reality. Wedding memories are last to eternity. I still remember my wedding at grand Banquet Halls where my all friends were invited, and my family members were there for me.
